Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer Treatment | San FranciscoSkin cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that one in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. People with fair skin, frequent sun exposure and a family history of skin cancer are at greatest risk. Fortunately, skin cancer is almost always curable if detected and treated early.

The most common skin cancers are:

  1. Basal cell carcinoma - 80-85% of all skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma affects cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis.

  2. Squamous cell carcinoma - 10% of all skin cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma affects cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.

  3. Melanoma - 5% of all skin cancers. Melanoma is a rare but very dangerous type of skin cancer. It is the leading cause of death from skin disease.

Moles and other birthmarks are pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink or purple (vascular nevi, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Though most birthmarks are benign, they may develop into cancer.

If your skin exhibits one or more of the following warning signs, you should contact Laub Dermatology immediately:

  • Unusual marks, bumps or growths on your skin
  • A sore that has not healed in 3-4 weeks
  • A wound that continually reopens or bleeds
  • A growth that increases in size or appears translucent
  • A mole with any of the following signs:
    • Larger than a pencil eraser (about 6 mm)
    • Rapidly changes in color, size or shape
    • Has multiple colors
    • Is located where it can't be easily monitored, such as on the scalp

If you notice any warning signs of skin cancer or need to make a recommended yearly comprehensive skin exam appointment, please call us at (415) 381-6661.

The light booth used to treat psoriasis

Psoriasis encompasses a group of chronic skin disorders that cause an itching and/or burning sensation, scaling and crusting of the skin. Over seven million men and women in the U.S. of all ages have some form of psoriasis, which may be mild, moderate or severe. The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet and genitals.

Psoriasis cannot be cured but it can be treated successfully, sometimes for months or years at a time and occasionally even permanently. Treatment depends on the type, severity and location of psoriasis; the patient’s age, medical history and lifestyle; and the effect the disease has on the patient’s general mental health.

Psoriasis treatments at Laub Dermatology fall into three categories:

  • Topical (applied to the skin) - Mild to moderate psoriasis
  • Phototherapy (ultraviolet light) - For moderate to severe psoriasis
  • Systemic (taken orally or by injection or infusion) - Moderate, severe or disabling psoriasis
